Do I need to get into Microsoft word before I cut and paste?

I need to change the format of a document in the one college course using the
APA formitting system. I found out how to cut, copy, and paste, the problem
is, I don't know where I need to be before I cut, paste. Do I need to have
gone into Microsoft Word first so I have a place to put the cut and pasted
things?
