O
OSIRIS
Hi all. I'd like to pick the brains of all you Word experts.
I am a long time user of Woody's Office Power Pack (a.k.a. "WOPR" by Woody
Leonard. It's served me well over the years, but the version I have only works
with Office/Word 97.
The company I work for is trying to move everyone to Office 2003, but I'm
resisting because I wouldn't be able to use WOPR without buying the latest
version (OK, I'm a cheapskate!).
Of course, if Office 2003 did the things I currently like WOPR for, then I would
not need WOPR. I don't use most of what WOPR has, but the parts I use I'd be
hard pressed to do without. Therefore I'll describe some of the more important
items and ask you all if it's possible to do these things in Word 2003 without
WOPR:
Things I use every single day:
(A) WOPR File New. I click the icon for file new and a menu opens up giving
me several options. Each one is configured by me to start a document ...
* Using a specific custom template unique to that choice,
* with an automatic save-as dialog to force to immediately name and save
the document into a pre-specified file path, and
* using a pre-specified filename mask for certain types of documents,
such as customer quotes.
(B) WOPR File Manager. Similar in some ways to the file manager that used to
be built into Word Perfect, where I have a number of configurable "Cubbyholes"
(favourite starting points), which allow me to organize my document folders in a
fairly complex fashion, yet jump immediately to any point in the maze to open a
file.
(C) WOPR Save-As. The save version of the file manager, allowing me to jump
to a favourite spot in the tree structure where I store documents before saving
a file.
[/soapbox mode on]
(No -- I DO NOTuse "My Documents"; in fact I avoid it like the plague. I will
not let Bill Gates dictate to me where and how I should organize my files)
[/soapbox mode off]
Things I use once in a while
(D) Enveloper. Allows me to create a series of pre-defined envelopes, each
with a definable return address (one for family, one for business, one for club
business, etc), with or without a graphic, each one with its own pre-determined
font(s), with or without postal bar codes, etc.
(E) WOPR View Headers and Footers. Just like Word 97's but with the ability
to set a different header and/or footer on the first page than on the rest and
also to be able to set up custom page numbering schemes. This is great if using
pre-printed letterhead on a proposal, but the second and subsequent pages are
plain stock.
(F) There's a few other things I'd use once or twice a year and many things
I'd never use.
