Do not allow selection of elements on master slide when in normal

In previous versions of Powerpoint, if you hit Ctrl-A to select all, or if
you clicked and dragged a box to select multiple items, you could not select
elements that were part of the master slide, including, for example, the page
number, the date, and other footer information. Now, in PowerPoint 2007, I
am dismayed to find that those footer items are selectable and I end up
accidentally selecting them all the time.

Why are those items selectable in a normal slide view? They are part of the
master slide, so they should be just like the background -- present and
visible, but not editable unless you are in the master slide view. I find
the new behavior not only very annoying, but also confusing in terms of the
logic of the UI (it just doesn't make sense to me). A couple folks pointed
out that I can hide these elements on a per-slide basis, but that doesn't
solve my problem. I want the footer there; I just don't want to accidentally
edit it.

If there are good reasons for allowing these types of master elements to be
selected while in an individual slide view, please add an option to disable
this behavior, and make that the default. I have used PowerPoint for more
than a decade and have never needed to edit the footer while in a normal
slide view, so I certainly don't want the current selection model as the
default. If it is useful to some folks, leave it as a special-case option so
that the normal usage is not disturbed.

Thanks!
