do you have to have outlook open in taskbar for the alert to work

Hi im trying to get the outlook 2003 or even 2007 to work with the email
notification working the only time it alerts me is if i minimize the outlook
program in the taskbar and then it will alert me of a new message but if i
close it so its not in the taskbar at all it wont alert me at all, is this
normal and if not how do i fix it please.

ok so you cant close it totally you have to have it in taskbar for it to work
is this correct and ill check out the 2007 one to see if its the same.

It's the same. Outlook has always needed to be open to perform automatic
polling.
