Do you have to use RBS

S

Stacie

We are currently implementing EPM and I am trying to find out if anyone has
opted to not use the RBS functionality. If so, why? Also, because of your
decision have you had more issues with security? Is it easier to maintain? Or
has it made it more challenging?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You do not need to use RBS if you do not wish to do so. Using RBS allows
you to control access to resources, and can also be used with Portfolio
Analyzer views and can assist with resource reporting. If you do not use
RBS, then the default permissions in Project Server allow your project
managers to see all resources in the system when using the Build Team from
Enterprise dialog in Microsoft Project Professional or in the View Resource
Assignments page in PWA. If this situation is not a concern for you, and if
you do not need to use RBS for Portfolio Analyzer reporting, then I am sure
you can live without it. If you wish to use RBS for Project Server security
to control access to resources, then refer to the following FAQ:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/UseRBStoControlAccessToResources.htm

Hope this helps.

Dale,

Thanks for the help. I think we are going to have to use the RBS if only
to control access to resource information. I just want to make sure the RBS
does not become a admin nightmare. From what I have read that is easy to do.
Do you have any advise as to how best to keep it simple? When we first
defined our RBS it was going to have at most 7 levels. Here is an example
of our RBS,

Company

I think the software sent your message before you could show me your
proposed RBS. Please finish the message and try again. Thanks!

Based on the RBS you show, you would need to set an RBS value for every
resource in the Enterprise Resource Pool to show Project Server "who reports
to whom." You will need to place team members at the lowest leaf on each
branch and place project managers at least one node higher on each branch.
You can then configure Project Server security to control access to
resources using the FAQ I referenced in my previous message to Stacie. Let
us know if you have questions.
