Do you want to replace Normal.dot?

I may have known the answer to this, but have forgotten it.

Why does this happen from time to time? I'm closing Word 97, and get a
prompt: "Do you want to replace the existing Normal.dot?"

Basically Normal.dot is your global template for Word. If you make changes
like toolbars, macros, icons, the View settings, etc. your Normal.dot file
must be saved to reflect these changes next time you open Word. There is a
setting under "Tools", "Options" that allows you to not be prompted to save,
however, this will automatically save changes made to this file. The bad
thing about that is you could have been given a virus through a macro or
something that you might notice until you close Word and are asked if you
"want to save your changes to normal.dot". If you choose not to be
prompted, changes will automatically be saved. This how I have mine set up
but it shouldn't be done unless you are comfortable with macros, have good
virus-checking software installed, etc.

FYI - Larry got it fixed. It was the normal.dot temp file hanging out from
a previous lockup.
