Do you want to revert?

K

Lately, every other word document ask me if I want to revert to saved
version.

As opposed to what???

As opposed the same document you already have open and may have changed
since opening it. If you say yes, it junks your editing and hands you
another copy of the document as it was when last you saved it. If you
say no, it does nothing and lets you continue working on the copy you
already have open. Or at least I *think* it does. What happens to
autosaved stuff? I'm not sure.

It is not one of Word's most clearly expressed dialogs is it? Every
time I see that, it stops me in my tracks while I think through all the
implied double negatives. It is up there with "Have you stopped beating
your wife?"

It might be a surprise to discover that you already have the document
open. Is there a copy hidden out of sight? What happens when you quit
Word? Is there the usual message asking if you would like to save a
document as you leave?

Can you translate to English? Man!

Ok, lets make it simple.
In Photoshop, I double click a file, and the file opens.

In Excel, I double click a file and the file opens.

In Word, I double click a file, and I get a message that asked if I want to
open the version that I saved. What's going on?? You mean before I saved
the file, and I always save the file, it kept an unsaved version on my
hardrive???????

Don't get it.

No, Word, almost certainly in error, thinks you are trying to open a
file that you already have open.

If you are sure you do not have the file open already. I guess you
should quit Word and try to open the file yet again.

Does the problem (you say every other document) occur consistently with
some files and never with others? If so, say yes to the "revert"
question on one of the baddies and then apply the "copy and paste all
but the last paragraph mark into a new document" folk remedy.

If that fails, apply all the usual magic potions to normal and settings
in the hope it will go sane.

Was it Arthur C Clarke who wrote "Any sufficiently advanced technology
is indistinguishable from magic" ? I bet he wrote that with Word.

Hi there,

Try the other fixes suggested by all means, but mine's a little simpler
- good old finger trouble!!

I'm having the same problem at the moment - just fitted a new mouse
(MacMice "The Mouse" - lovely!) and haven't got the double-click speed
set right just yet. If I'm in a hurry and double-click too fast, I get
the same wonderful message.

Mind you, I've just installed OS 10.4.2 and Word 2004 and now I
sometimes can't open documents at all - the "Command-O" option doesn't
work, nor does the "File - Open" drop-down menu command - nothing
happens!!

P.S.if Word's magic, it's definitely black magic!

Hi Kevs:

What this means is that the file you double-clicked is already open. Next
time you see that error, translate it like this:

"You already have that document open, and you have made changes to it. Do
you want to keep your changes, or discard your changes and re-open the
version on our hard disk?"

* If you say "YES" Word will discard whatever changes you made and open the
original file again.

* If you say NO, Word will do nothing and you can continue to edit the
document.

If you say that this is happening frequently, then I would reboot your
computer. It is possible that you have conflicting file versions in your
temporary folder (which is hidden).

Hope this helps

Sorry: Not black magic: bugs :) Apple made some changes in 10.4 that just
happen to conflict with Word 2004.

We're waiting on a series of fixes from both companies. Word is not going
to work right on OS 10.4 until those fixes get made.

Sorry

Just to keep some perspective here (especially since John is not himself in
Tiger yet and is going on the basis of reports mostly on this newsgroup): I
and many others are not having any problems with Word in OS 10.4. I'm sure
there are some, and it's understandable that people who use Word more
intensely than I do might be wary of moving to Tiger, but "ordinary" users
of Word may not see any new problems in Tiger. I don't.

And yet another clarification: Many (though not all) of the Word/OS 10.4
issues affect users who are on networks. If you are not, you are much less
likely to have problems that's *less* likely, not *un*likely.

Thanks everyone!
Not on a network.

Don't think I could have open file so many times, but I'll keep conscious of
this information.
