.doc attachment defaulting to Paint

This just started tonight. When I try to open a .doc attachment in a note I
get the message "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmat
file, or it's format is not currently supported." Outlook 2007 has been
running perfectly for months. I get the same error on all .doc attachments
even though they have opened before without a problem. All other non-.doc
attachemnt open fine. Seems like Outlook is defaulting to Paint instead of
Word. Office Professional 2007 and Windows XP Professional installed. Any
suggests how to get this working again?

If you save the file to your desktop and try to open it by double clicking
on it, does it try to open in paint as well?

If it does, and I'm assuming it will, you need to re-associate .doc with
Word.
