.doc attachments

Since applying the most recent update for Mac Office 2004 all .doc attachments are reverting to Word 97. These won't open by double clicking, but have to be opened by using 'open a file' from the File Menu of Word.

Select one of the documents in the Finder. Do a Get Info. Under Open with,
select Word 2004 then click "Change All."

BTW, do you still have Word 97 installed? The choices should only be for
applications you have. Certainly you don't need Word 97 any longer.

Yes, it was the Get info solution, thanks. Although I have used the 'Get Info' many times for other purposes, I wasn't aware of this use of it, probably because I have not this sort of problem before.
