.doc extension shows Wordpad not Word..

All .doc files are showing the Wordpad icon and files description as Wordpad.
When clicked on however, the correct application, Word 2003 loads the file.
I have run an Office repair - no change. Have run TweakUI fix icons - no
change.

Although cosmetic I find this annoying and I like to fix probs when
discovered no matter how small- they have a habit of getting bigger.

History: I did have a problem with Office files showing OO icons but Office
apps running. Got over that after asking in the XP group and re-ran the OO
set up which sorted that problem but left me with this one. I have since
removed OO.

TIA that some kind soul will know the answer.

In Windows Explorer, right-click on a .doc file and select Open With >
Choose Program. In the resulting dialog, select Word and make sure
that you do check the "Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file" check box. Then click OK. The icons should change and
Word should be used when you double-click on the .doc files.

Thanks for the reply, but yes I know all that you've posted and it doesn't
work. In fact what happens when I do as you say, shown in the dialogue, it
says that Wordpad is the default application and if I want to restore it
press restore button. Currently this dialogue shows that Word is the current
application - if I click on change then Wordpad is selected and the "always
use..." is greyed out.
Currently Word fires up when clicking on a .doc file - the only issue is
that in Explorer it is shown as a Wordpad file.
One other little funny - I'm used to selecting a number of files so that the
application loads all I've selected. I did this earlier and only the first
file loaded - Wordpad - selecting it on it's own and it ran Word.
Thanks.
