.doc file extension

Chris

In My Documents, I double click on a file with a .doc
extension and it opens WINWORD which is great, but why
does the file not open as is the case with Excell etc?
Many thanks,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean... are you referring to
the same file, with the .doc extension, or other files
with an .xls extension (for Excel) etc.?

If you're referring to other files with extensions that
should indicate that they open with a certain program,
(i.e. XLS =Excel) perhaps your file associations are not
set up correctly.

This may depend on what operating system you're using (you
didn't specify), but generally, if you right-click a file
with a particular extension type that isn't behaving how
you'd like, you can specify "Open With..." then "Choose
Program..." and check off "always use this application" to
change the file extension association.

If you run regedit.exe from the Start | Run line and navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\shell\open\command ( the 8 is for Word
2000, you may be running a different version ), you probably see a default
value in the right pane that is listed as "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n. This opens the new instance of Word. Just
below the default entry, you should see an entry named "command" with data
something like 26,!!gxsf(Ng]qF`H{LsWORDFiles>llT]jI{jf(=1&L[-81-] /n
I suspect that second registry entry is missing.
