.DOC files corrupted

Five documents that I made of commentary notes made in MS Office Professional 2003 Word doc format which I used 2 days ago has suddenly become corrupted. I've spent 2 days using various methods to repair individual files that I found doing Google searches, running a repair of the application from control panel and finally a scan of the folder all files reside in with Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery. Are there other options open to me?

In Word choose File, Open, navigate to the file. Click Once on the file to select it. Click on the down arrow to the right of the open button and choose open and repair
