.doc Files fail to open after Office 2004 upgrade

S

sjciske

I upgraded my wife's PB15 G4 10.4.9 to Office 2004 from V.x

Now, many Entourage .doc attachments fail to open with an error
message that reads "Word can not open your document as it may be
already open or it is not a valid .doc file"

I am very puzzled?

Just because you cross-posted into the Word group does not mean we know the
answer in here. I have sent it back to Entourage as well, they will have
some thoughts on this matter.

I *think* you have troubles in your Entourage database, possibly caused by
having both rthe Office X and Office 2004 daemons running together.

It may be that you did not run Entourage and allow it to upgrade the VX
database so it can't read it properly.

It may be that you have not applied the Office 11.3.3 Update.

I think what Word is telling you is that it cannot get permisison from the
system to open the file. That means the fiule is either not where it
expects it to be, or the login you are using does not have permission to
access that database.

When you save the attachment out to the disk, what happens? If you get the
same error message, it may indeed be a damaged document and we will have to
dig further.

You "shouldn't" open documents within email anyway. I know we all do it,
but it's not a good way to work. It leads to all sorts of complexities from
the fact that the document is not actually in the file system when you
attempt to open it (in Entourage, the file is saved out to the Saved
Attachments folder when you attempt to open it, which overcomes most of the
problems).

Hope this helps

Returned froma short family Vacation to Washington DC.

I have rebuilt the Entourage mail databases, removed and reinstalled
the licensing info on Office 2004, installed the 11.3.5 update - all
to no avail. The account we are using is an IMAP account and when I
log on to the website to get the mail, the attachments open perfectly.

It is only when I access the attachments in Entourage that I get the
error message. Does this help?

Is it possible that you have partially downloaded the message. This would
result in a corrupt file as it¹s partially downloaded.

If you drag the attachment to the desktop, what icon does it show? If it¹s
not Word, do a Get Info and select Open with.... Select Word.

All done to no avail. I can open the attachments using the web mail

no open. I can download from the webmail to the desktop and it will
open no problem.

The problem could be at your systemlevel. Create a new user in System

If it fails there, do an "Archive and Install" of the OS. "Archive and

RESOLUTION!

I tested the problem using a new identity as you suggested. The new
identity workied flawlessly.

So I went back and forth and checked the account details from the old
to the new. Under Tools>Accounts>Edit>Options there was a check in the
box to only download partial messages over 20 kb - thus any message
with an attachment was not completely downloaded from the IMAP server
and thus the funky error message when I tried to open it,

I had to the go through the old identity mail boxes/folders and
download all the partial messages and it then worked like it should.
I tried a couple of times before downloading the remainder of a
message to open an attachment and got the funky error but after
completing the download, no problem.

Thanks for all the help!

RESOLUTION

I created a new profile as Diane suggeted and Entourage worked
flawlessly.

So I toggled bak and forth between the old identity and new identity
looking at the account details.

Under TOOLS > ACCOUNTS > EDIT > OPTIONS i discoverd that the old
account had a check in the box to "Download Partial Files Over 20 kb"
while the new one did not.

Thus, I opened a known problem email/attachment tried it and got the
funky error message. I then downloaded the entire message and on
openig the attachment - NO PROBLEM.

Somehow, in the upgrade process, it must have been checked as emails
prior to the upgrade were fine,

Anyway, all is fine now

Thanks for the help!

It is only when I access the attachments in Entourage that I get the
error message. Does this help?

Just because you cross-posted into the Word group does not mean we know
the
answer in here. I have sent it back to Entourage as well, they will have
some thoughts on this matter.
I *think* you have troubles in your Entourage database, possibly caused
by
having both rthe Office X and Office 2004 daemons running together.
It may be that you did not run Entourage and allow it to upgrade the VX
database so it can't read it properly.
It may be that you have not applied the Office 11.3.3 Update.
I think what Word is telling you is that it cannot get permisison from
the
system to open the file. That means the fiule is either not where it
expects it to be, or the login you are using does not have permission to
access that database.
When you save the attachment out to the disk, what happens? If you get
the
same error message, it may indeed be a damaged document and we will have
to
dig further.
You "shouldn't" open documents within email anyway. I know we all do it,
but it's not a good way to work. It leads to all sorts of complexities
from
the fact that the document is not actually in the file system when you
attempt to open it (in Entourage, the file is saved out to the Saved
Attachments folder when you attempt to open it, which overcomes most of
the
problems).
Hope this helps

I upgraded my wife's PB15 G4 10.4.9 to Office 2004 from V.x
Now, many Entourage .doc attachments fail to open with an error
message that reads "Word can not open your document as it may be
already open or it is not a valid .doc file"
I am very puzzled?
I also cross posted this to the WORD group.
