.doc files in Internet Explorer

When users click links to files of .doc extensions in IE,
Word 2002 opens a blank document instead of opening the
document in the IE window. Any suggestions on how to make
the document open in IE? The website is blackboard.com
and they (of course) say it's a problem with Word/IE.
