doc files opening in wordpad even if written in word2003

I have rec'd files that were composed using word 2003 (both computers are xp)

they are opening on my computer w/wordpad

i have gone into my computer tools, files and it looks like everything is
set corretly for those files to open in word

any ideas as to why it's not

Go to Start Run (or Winkey+R) and type in

winword /r

which will reregister Word in Windows.
