Cmon ............. Somebody !!!!!!

..doc is not a valid Win32 application

THE ABOVE IS AN ERROR MESSAGE I RECEIVE WHEN I TRY TO OPEN (BY DOUBLE
CLICKING) A WORD 2003 DOCUMENT USING WORD 2007.
I CAN OPEN THE 2003 WORD DOCUMENT FROM WITHIN THE MICROSOFT OFFICE WORD 2007
PROGRAMME BUT THIS IS MUCH MORE CUMBERSOME THAN OPENING THE 2003 WORD
DOCUMENT JUST BY DOUBLE CLICKING ON ITS ICON, WHICH IS WHAT I WANT TO BE ABLE
TO DO.
i TRY TO SET THE FILE ASSOCIATION FOR THE DOCUMENT TO WORD 2007 BUT I CANNOT
AS WHEN I TRY TO DO THIS WORD 2007 IS NOT AVAILABLE AS A PROGRAMME IN THE
FILE ASSOCIATION LIST, EVEN IF I BROWSE AND MANUALLY TRY TO INSERT WORD 2007
INTO THE LIST OF PROGRAMS FOR FILE ASSOCIATION IT WILL NOT APPEAR IN THE LIST
OF PROGRAMMES.
I ALSO TRIED A REPAIR FROM WITHIN THE CONTROL PANEL AND THIS DID NOT WORK.
WHAT IS MOST ANNOYING IS THAT I INSTALLED OFFICE 2007 ONTO ANOTHER PC
RUNNING VISTA PREMIUM AND IT WORKS FINE BUT ON MY PC RUNNING VISTA BASIC,
WORD 2007 REFUSES TO OPEN ANY 2003 DOCUMENTS BY DOUBLE CLICKING ON THEM.
ANY HELP APPRECIATED AS I CANNOT FIND AN ANSWER ANYWHERE.....
THANKS IN ADVANCE

'Somebody' wants to know why you posted in all caps, which makes for very
hard reading.
And in file associations what exactly is shown for the .doc extension?

I thought it might be easier to read in caps, obviously I was wrong.

The extension for doc files is as norman i.e .doc

Ive been looking around and lots of people seem to have the same problem but
I can't seem to find a cure for the problem, I think there might be a
registry key issue with it but I don't really know and judging by the
responses ive had so far no one else seems to have an answer so far.
Any help appreciated.... as I say the word 2007 program runs fine on my
Vista premium PC but not on the Vista basic PC......

Maybe easiest to figure this out from a console prompt. Start a console (aka
DOS prompt) session and run the following command.

assoc .doc

That should show something like

..doc=Word.Document.8

If assoc doesn't show anything for the .doc extension, it'd be expedient to
fully UNINSTALL (caps OK for emphasis) then reinstall Office 2007. For Excel
at least you could use the Run dialog (hold down the Windows logo key and
press R) to run the command

Excel /regserver

Maybe there's something similar for Word. If assoc does show something for
the .doc extension, run the following command.

ftype Word.Document.8

If everything is OK, it should show something like

Word.Document.8="C:\Program Files\MSOFFICE\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE"

If not, again it'd be expedient to uninstall then reinstall.

If you're installing under Vista Basic, are you installing from a user
account with administrator privileges?

Thanks for your help, I am afraid I got a little annoyed at one of the
Microsoft MVP's and may have gotten a little carried away in insulting him
but he was pontificating too much.
Please don't pay any heed if you come across any other posts as my replies
were intended to make him look in the mirror.
Thanks again Harlan and I will give it a go.......

Ran the DOS command thingy and it matches what you posted al
right......
I have installed it on Vista Basic with full administrato
privelidges.
The DOS thingy states that that is the file association (the 8 thing
etc) but still not opening by double clicking.....
Surely a reg key issue ???????
AAAArgh..............
Thanks agai

Maybe, but you may be able to fix this from Word's Options dialog. I
seldom use Word, so I'm not familiar with its options, but Excel 2003
has an option named

Ignore other applications

in the General tab of its Options dialog. If checked, Excel will
launch when you double click files associated with Excel, but it won't
open those files. There may be a similar option for Word.

Thanks Harlan, Word 2007 seems to have a Gazillion options and I thin
ive gone through them all,,,,,, still no joy.
Thank
