doc merging in SharePoint

I am using Word 03 and storing my docs in a SharePoint doc library on XP. I
have an empty document. I also have other documents that I am merging into
this empty document to create a final doc. I do this using the INCLUDETEXT
field (Insert > Field > INCLUDETEXT > doc URL). My problem is that the
formatting for the docs that I import gets completely hosed. Any ideas on
what I am doing wrong?

Includetext isn't a particularly reliable method for including arbitrary
chuns of text, partly because you may get clashes between style definitions
in the including and included documents.

However, if you see \*Mergeformat switches in your INCLUDETEXT fields, get
rid of them.

Use Alt-F4 to toggle between "field codes" view and "field results" view

It's difficult to be prescriptive in this area. If your styles are organised
and consistent across documents and you don't have problems with the section
breaks in your included files (which "contain" the headers and footers for a
section) clashing with the section breaks in the including file, you may
find INCLUDETEXT works OK for you. If you don't you may find it's easier to
preprocess each document before insertion -you may find some useful info. at

In my version of Word Alt+F4 is assigned to Quit Word, Alt+F9 to Toggle
Field Display.

Thanks Peter. That's what I don't understand - I thought my Styles were built
consistently across documents. But, for example, I have a Style called
"Chapter" that is way off the page when I merge the docs. Also, my tables are
ruined. I don't get it.
