.doc opens on one machine but not another

I re-format a .doc into a newsletter after getting it from the company
that creates the Word document in the first place. The problem is, I
cannot open the document directly. i have to send it to a friend
first, he opens it in Word (either on a Mac or a PC - he has both) and
then emails it back to me and it opens fine. He says he doesn't even
save it. He just opens it and uses the "Send as attachment" feature in
Word.

Why can't I open the original document?

In what version of Word was it created? What format was it saved in?

In what version of are you not able to open it?

In what version of Word does your friend successfully open it and save it?

The document is created in Word 2000 (PC). I try to open it in Word
2003 (PC) and get the message:
"Word has experienced an error trying to open this file. Try these
suggestions:

Check the file permission for the document or drive
Make sure there is sufficient free memory and drive space
Open the file with the Recovery text converter"

I e-mail it to a friend who opens it in either Word 2003 (PC) or Word
2004 (Mac). He sends it to me using "File/Send to/Mail Recipient (as
attachment)." He does NOT save it before sending.

Try the Open and Repair option in Word 2003.

Terry

Sorry for taking so long for this but I didn't have a document to try
it with.
The Open and Repair feature did not work. I also tried Open as Read
Only and Open as Copy - nothing worked.

This is very bizarre. Do you Know what version of Word the originators are
using? Under Tools, Options, General Tab, make sure that the Confirm
Conversion on Opening is checked. Now when you try to open one of these
documents directly, does Word present you with a choice of formats to open?

Are you saving the document to your HDD first? Do you use NAV or another AV?
