.DOC sent through online school received as .DAT.... WHY?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I'm currently taking online school and sent in my assignment, confirmed that was saved as a .DOC file, when the professor receives the information it is as a .DAT file?

The tech support had a work around to "open with" and select Word and will work. OR for the professor to download the file and rename with doc and then will work.

I'm hooping they are that willing to do so otherwise I need to find out why it's doing this.

Please help

my daughter had the exact same problem yesterday - it happened on one Mac but not another.
Our resolution was to get the sender to send the same email with attachments as Plain Text and not as Rich Text or HTML. The sender was using Outlook on this ocassion.

The issue I have is this is a math class and I gave to send through the schools system. Ove been using this MAC for over 2 years and haven't had a problemwith word on other classes. I can change to plain text becuse I don't believe the equasion editor will show up correctly.

Hello wntsom4 et al;

Sending the email *message* as text does not change anything about the
attached file, but it should prevent the recipient's mail system from
generating the .dat file which causes the problem.

Also, it really doesn't matter how long any of us have been doing what we
do, the fact is that things around us *have* been changing on an ongoing
basis :) Usually for the better, but sometimes not. As long as things work
as we wish we're usually unaware that the changes have even occurred, let
alone what they actually are. It's only when something *doesn't* work as
expected that the matter attracts our attention :)

To best insure that attachments are received as you hope:

1- Always use the appropriate filename extension when you save any file,

2- Check your email program's settings to be sure it's configured to use the
proper encoding method for attachments. This varies depending on email app,

3- Compose & send only Text email messages ‹ there's typically no real need
to format text or included smiley faces in email,

4-Create a Stuffed or Zipped copy of the file/s to be included & send that
as the attachment, &

5- If the recipient has no need to edit/revise the attached file, create &
send a PDF rather than sending the attachment in its native format.
