Docs auto copy when deleted

Have Office 2007. Recently docs in word auto copy when deleted. I now have
100's of copies of docs I want deleted. I cannot recall doing anything to
start this.

That's not a function of Word. Are you deleting them in Windows Explorer or
what? Which OS are you using?

Try this. Turn off the option "Create a back up copy" from Word Options >
Word Options > Advanced > Save group > Turn off "Always create a backup copy"
check box.
