Docs containing TOC's won't open

Hi,
I'm managing a server-full of old user manuals with
separate contents pages linking to the relevant chapters -
each held in it's own document. I'm running Word 2000
but since upgrading to Windows XP, I can't open these TOC
files - from File>Open or from Explorer; no error
message - Word just hangs permanently. Is there a fix for
this or do I have to rebuild all of the TOC's?

Thanks,
Steve

Can the files be opened with the "Recover text from any
file" file type in Word's File Open dialog box?

Is it possibly a permissions question (WinXP is quite
finicky about that, isn't it)? Or have the paths to the
files changed?
