Docs not opening when connected to network

Hi All.

I have a very strange problem with word docs not being
opened while the PC is connected to the network. If you
try and open the DOC while connected the machine appears
to hang. If you pull out the cable word will open the doc
almost immediatly.

Any ideas why this could be happening.

The problem is company wide on machines running WinXP and
Office 2k. The Win2k and Office 2k machines open the same
files almost immediatly without any problems.

The usual reason for this is that the document is attached to a template
that has been moved or no longer exists. Word will try to find the template
when you open the doc; when it's connected to the network, it has a lot of
folders to search, which can take a very long time. If you disconnect it
from the network, then it can complete its search (and give up) fairly
quickly.

To solve the problem, go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins and change the
attached template. The best bet is Normal.dot (make sure that "Automatically
update document styles" is *not* checked), since Word should always be able
to find that.

As long as you don't update the styles, you should see no difference in the
document; the only thing you might lose is any custom toolbars, macros, or
AutoText in the original template, but you've already lost those, anyway, if
Word can't find the template.
