docs not working when home and office 2007 installed

word program showing on start menue, but all old .doc files will not open
from menu. Can only access if I open program first then select. the w icon
not showing.. when I open as - winword doesnt appear. when i browse and
select winword it doesnt add it to the program lists.. help anyone - i cant
even open email attachements with .doc files
