document already open

lately when I open a word doc or an excel doc, it gives me a message that
says the document is already open and I can't open documents with the same
name.

I have office 97 on windows xp.

Any ideas what's wrong?

Did you install any updates to Office 97 as you should have?

I have installed the updates.
It was a little funky though.
Word and Excel didn' t load at first after I installed the updates.
They did start to work after a couple of restarts.

Do you think I should uninstall and start over?
