Document cannot be resized to use full screen

When I have two monitors (1920x1200 and 1280x854) connect to my
Powerbook, I cannot resize word documents to use the full 1920x1200. It
appears that Word resizes documents on the 1920x1200 monitor to only
use 1280x854. Occasionally a document window will be 1920 high, but the
bottom 1/3 is blank and does not update when scrolling through the
document. Disabling the 1280x854 builtin display and restarting Word
"fixes" the problem. Has anyone else come up with an practical fix that
let's you use all your screen space?

You are not alone. Try googling the group for similar stories.
I get on OK with 1024*768 plus 1280*1024 external, but plenty of people
with bigger monitors are running into your mess.

Try an experiment. When you get a messed up window, put Word into Page
View, and view » zoom » page width. Then wiggle the window size by
dragging the bottom right corner.
Does that fix it? Please report back, 'cos I can't test it, 'cos mine
won't go wrong, but I do use that trick to force Word to redraw when
sometimes the window corrupts with repeated half height characters
after a scrolling orgy.

And do you have your PowerBook switched off when you connect the external
display?

(I'm another who doesn't have this problem (17" and 15" PBk models, 20"
widescreen current display and 2-year-old 17" or 19" display) but I'm
fascinated re what's causing your problem. I know there is an
Apple-acknowledged bug with the Apple 30" display, but not others).

Hi Clive:

I thought it was an Apple-acknowledged bug with Tiger?

Either way, an Apple/Microsoft fix is in the works.

There are two ends to the problem: Apple is not firing the event that
should "inform" us that the resolution has changed, and Word is not getting
the event that does. Both companies need to make a change.

In the meantime, log out before adding or removing monitors and you won't
get the problem.

Sorry...
