Document changes in Office 2003 being lost

We have several remote users who frequently loose changes to their files.
They do a save and get no error messages - but when they reopen the file the
changes are not there. Sometimes they do a save-as and the new file does not
get written. This has apparently happened with both Word and Excel. I don't
know if it has happened with other applications. The user files are stored
on a remote file server. I'm also told that when this happens the temporary
files don't get deleted from the document folder.

This is happening often enough to be a major issue for the users but
infrequently enough to make it very difficult to debug. Unfortunately the
affected users are on the opposite coast from me which makes it harder. I
have not yet been able to replicate the problem myself (even logging in
remotely to one of their workstations). I have just gotten involved in this
problem today but I am told that the event logs have been examined at times
corresponding to the errors with no indication of problems.

I suspect a network problem since it seems like the network latency goes up
at times - but I would still expect some sort of error to be logged. The
users do report that Word is often unresponsive to an extended period during
a save or close.

I'm looking for any ideas as to how to get a handle on this. Are there other
logs that I can look at or monitors that I can set up?

We are having the same issue, I have spent almost 2 years on this issue and
have seen it at several locations, on everything from XPHome to XPPro in
workgroup or Domain... Its really frustrating for my clients and its enough
for me to start telling my clients to switch to Open Office. Its time
Microsoft got off its ass and started addressing this... This is not the
first post on this issue and I guarantee it wont be the last..

YES IM FED UP WITH THIS!!!!
