document corruption

I work in an office that uses both PCs and Macs and we seem to be
having problems with one of the Macs. Whenever this one Mac (a
MacPro) works on a Word document, the document seems to become corrupt
and crashes whenever someone tries to work on it. We are an
archaeological firm and there are a number of us in the office that
will work on completing one document. We put and pull documents off
the server, which is also a Mac. We've always had problems with this
MacPro but the problem seems to becoming worse. The latest problem is
with a document that was started on a Mac and then put on the server.
The MacPro user took the document off of the server and made changes
to it, including inserting a number of images (maps) that were
produced on a PC. The document was then put back onto the server and
from that point on no one, either PC or Mac user, has been able to
work with the document as it continually crashes. Short of deleting
all of the images and starting over, there doesn't seem to be anyway
of fixing this document. Are there any presets on the MacPro that
could be causing the computer to continually create corrupt Word
documents? We're at our wits end with this computer, which is a pity
because it's otherwise a lovely machine and it would be a pity to see
it sailing through the air to a rather abrupt meeting with the
pavement below.

The only thing that could create that that I can think of would be a
corruption in the templates used on this Mac.
Does the corruption still occur if you set the Normal.dot template aside
on this Mac?

Hello,
Furthermere to what you have been adiviced so far, I wonder whether on that
MAC you have the same version (updates) installed as on other MACs?

(Gosh those grammar is always confusing to me the others/other/another, so
hopefully it's correct ;-) any Easily remebered explanation are heartly
welcomed)

Are there any differences regarding Word on other Mac and *that* Mac -
addins? However, template corruption sounds as most reasonable.

Does this happen on any document or just some specific?

Here is some explanation:

This happens on just about any word document that the MacPro works
on. Would wiping the hard drive and doing a compete reinstall be
helpful? That's what some people in the office are suggesting but I'm
not sure if that'll really solve the problem if it's actually a
template corruption.

I really doubt that you would have to go through such extremes. Why
reinstall the system for instance when it is obviously a Word issue??
And even then, I doubt the app itself is to balme and that's why I
suggested that it could be related to templates.

It's not very often that I can't understand your posts, LC. Since you ask:
the first part would be "Further to what you have been advised so far, ...".
;-)

Just keep going as you are -- your posts are extremely helpful!

Hi Jennifer:

Wiping the hard drive will only solve the problem until next time :)

I would be tempted to RE-apply Apple's 10.4.9 Combo Updater. For some
reason, it seems not to update some files if it is run before Office is
installled, customised, or updated.

I also think it's a corruption in the user's Normal template. All you need
do is find and re-name that file. Word will recreate a new one next time it
starts. NOTE: Word must be quit, not just minimised, when you do this,
otherwise it holds a copy of the bad one in memory which it will rewrite to
disk on shut down.

Cheers

Hi Clive,
thank you very much. Any hint how to use Other/the other/another? I'm
aware I cannot use another whith plural so then *the others* or *other
Mac* are 2 possible cases, aren't they?

"the other", "an other", "one other" -- Singular -- However many things we
are talking about, there's only one single "other" thing.

"These others", "those others", "some others" -- Plural: however many of
"these" things there may be, there is more than one of the "other" things.

You weren't expecting English to be logical, were you?? Good... Glad we got
that settled...

And don't allow yourself to go schizoid trying to maintain a balance between
what is "grammatically correct" - we heathen revolutionists on one side of
the Atlantic can't even concur with those who curtsey to the Queen :)...
i.e.: Microsoft *is*, Microsoft *are*??????

Just keep up the good work - if anyone needs clarification let them be bold
enough to ask!

John,
many thanks for explanation - now I can enrol for English state
exams :D. This is their favourite grammar check.

CyberTaz,
I quite never get hang on that strange measures people oversea use :D.
I remember that time I went for the first into diary and say I'd like
10dkg of this cheese. They stare at me like I'm completely mad (and my
aborigine colleague was dead by laughing)

Hi L.:

Anytime you want help with English, just ask. Many of us need it too :)

And many of the people in here either teach it, or do it for a living. For
example: I have been writing and editing books for thirty-odd years. So I
ask Clive when I need help :)

If you are going to ask about English, always mention whether you need the
"correct" answer, or the one we all use. Very few native speakers of
English ever use the "official" rules, and when we do, it's mainly by
accident. Gramatically-correct English sounds quite strange, on both sides
of the Atlantic.

English always has been an "evolving" language, and currently it is evolving
very quickly. Much of what I learned in school is no longer considered good
writing, and often is seen as undesireably wordy.

Cheers

To tell you the truth, I'm starting to think "*de*volving" would be a more
fitting adjective :)... Seems like English is being "dumbed-down" even more
rapidly than the software %-}
