Document crashes word.x but opens in word 2000?

I received a word document that opens just fine in Word 2000 (either on a PC
or under Virtual PC). However, when I attempt to open the document in
Word.X, Word.X bombs and closes with a rather non-descript error message.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to go about attempting to open such
a document under Word.X?

Besides the repair disk permissions, delete Word X preferences, and
etc. routine, have you tried a few other things, like:

Verify you can open another Word document in Word X

Open the problem Word document in Word 2000, then save as another
document that you try in Word X

Copy and paste from problem Word document in Word 2000 under VPC to
Word X

I'd already tried the other suggestions, but cutting and pasting was one
that I hadn't attempted. I opened the document in Word (through RDC) and
pasted the document into a Word.X new document. That worked, and I seem to
be able to edit the document without a problem. No rhyme or reason why that
works and opening the document directly doesn't.
