Document does not open from Windows Explorer

Using Office 2007:
Something has changed recently whereby I am unable to open a .doc file
(double-click on the file name) from Windows Explorer when Word is not
running. Word starts but no document is opened. If I leave Word running and
double-clicking on the file name from Windows Explorer, it opens the document
successfully.
