document does not open on double-click within explorer

Hello.

I am using Windows XP together with Office 2000. Until some weeks ago,
WORD worked properly regarding double-clicking WORD documents within
the windows explorer or within other applications like eMail clients. I
don't know what happened, but now double-clicking on WORD documents
does not open the documents anymore, although WORD itself starts (with
no active document).
When I start WORD using the start button on the screen and load the
document afterwards, using the WORD menu functions, the document opens
properly.

Does somebody has an explanation for this behavior and a solution to
"repair" the double-clicking functionality for opening WORD documents?

Regards.

Hi.

I tried the link above. Unfortunately, ReRegistering does not change a
thing for my computer's behavior. It does not get better and
fortunately it does not get worse, either. Could there be an other
cause for this problem, not being able to double-click a WORD document
for an ordinary open action?

Regards.

Make sure that Open is set as the default action (though reregistering Word
should take care of this).

Hi Suzanne,

following the link in your first answer, I find an error message which
seems to accompany the open action for a special kind of configuration
(which could be fixed by ReRegistering). In my case, however, there is
no such error message. WORD just does not open the file. No error
message. Nothing. Just an empty screen; as if I had just started WORD
from the start menu and closed the empty document by mouse-click onto
the second row in the right corner of my screen.

Any suggestions?

Regards.

Try reregistering anyway. It won't hurt anything and it may fix your
problem.

I tried about 3 times. Then re-booting my computer. And again 2 times.

But it didn't help.

You tried _what_ about 3 times? How did you try?

I tried the ReRegistering procedure as described in the like above
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm):

---------------------
1. Click Start | Run (bottom- left corner of your screen).
2. In the "Open" box, type:
winword /r
and press Enter. Note that there is a space before the forward
slash
---------------------

after some attempts to open WORD documents by double-clicking,
afterwards (with no success), I then re-booted my computer and tried
again. No change. Still an empty WORD window. After that, I tried
ReRegistering again and again. No change at all.

If you right-click on a Word document icon, does the Open command appear in
bold?
If you select Properties when right-clicking, what shows up?

yes, the OPEN command appears in bold.
If you select Properties when right-clicking, what shows up?

the document properties. The two first entries ("file type" and "open
with") on the first page are set to [Microsoft Word-Document] and
[Microsoft Word for Windows].

Then I have exhausted my store of suggestions and ideas. Sorry. Perhaps
someone else will be able to think of something that will help you.
