Document expands to thousands of pages

I have a small document in Word 2000 with a few figures embedded in it.
Whenever I edit the paragraphs immediately before certain figures, the
document instantly expands by adding thousands of blank pages. This forces
me to shut Word down and reopen the document to the last saved version. Any
ideas?

By the way, attempt the recovery procedures on a COPY of the
file, not on the original file.

Okay, that seems to have taken care of the problem, at least for now. I
deleted the section break in the final paragraph and in another paragraph
that was causing the same problem. I also replaced the Normal.dot template
and instructed Word to prompt me before it saves any new copies of Normal.dot
so that I can instruct it to close the template without saving. Still don't
know what caused the corruption in the first place, but I'll be on my guard
now. Thanks.
