Document format changes

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

We recently migrated a user to a different iMac because of issues she was experiencing with her hardware. The new build is Mac OS 10.4.11 and MS Office 2004 (same as her old build).

When she goes to open Word files she previously created, the formatting changes and causes issues with margins, page breaks, etc.

What could be causing this issue?

Hello Michael,

'Fraid you'll have to be a *lot* more specific than "the formatting changes
and causes issues with margins, page breaks, etc." Not being able to look
over your shoulder, our fertile imaginations can envisage hundreds of
options that you might be talking about. Too many to respond to.

Post back with explicit details and someone will help. :)

Cheers,

Did you bring her Normal Template across from the old machine?

Does she have the same fonts loaded?

Is she using the same driver for the same type of printer?

Have you set the correct default paper size?

All of these will alter the presentation of the document for a user.
Skilled users will format their documents so that the documents do not
change when they go to a different machine.

Send the user in here and we can coach her on how to build her documents so
that they hold their formatting when she changes machines.

Hope this helps

Sorry about not responding sooner but we have parked this issue for a few weeks.

No, we didn't bring over her Normal Template from her previous machine (we were having issues with Word freezing and brought over as little as possible

Yes, she has the same fonts loaded

Yes, she has the same driver for the same printer

Yes, the default paper size is the same.

The issue appears to be with vertical formatting. For example - table of contents has two extra lines that force a new page break.

Horizontal formatting appears to be the same - line length, sentence breaks, etc

I have a pdf showing the orignal formatting as well as the current Word file - which is the one that is not behaving. Would anyone want to take a look??

Hi Mike:

From her old Normal template, use Organiser to copy all the styles to her
new Normal template.

You can get to Organiser from Format>Style>Organiser...

It's self-explanatory from there.

Over time, users tweak their styles to their personal taste. You need to
bring all those changes over.

And make sure her document margins are the same.

Cheers
