document gone

I was just working on something for four hours in Microsoft 2007. I saved
repeatedly because it is so important. When I saved it the last time, the
program froze. I had to end the program, thinking I'd get my document back
without the few last changes I had made. But now, when I go to open it, it
says it cannot be located. It is no longer even listed in "my documents"
(where i'd been saving it) but it is still in My Recent Documents from the
Start Menu. I need it so badly, I have no idea what to do. It just keeps
saying "cannot be located."

Have you tried doing a search on your c: drive for the file name?

Do you open the file from explorer and not the dialogue box? You may have
inadvertantly move the document to a nearby folder.

I am presuming that My Documents is located on your local HDD (C: drive) and
that you were not using some type of removable media such as a flash drive?
If so, open Windows Explorer and look for it in My Documents: if you list in
date order, it should be easy to find.

Yes, it was on my hard drive. I've tried those suggestions, but no luck.
Searching says nothing is found, and there is simply nothing there listed in
My Documents. I checked the recycle bin, also nothing. I think I'm just
screwed. This sucks.
Thanks anyway!

Susan,

Are you having problems saving documents in general?
Did you save using the save icon, or using the File\save option?

Was this a document you opened as an attachment? If so, unless you used Save
As, it was saved in a temporary file folder.

This has never happened to me before. I am always diligent about saving
often. It was not an attachement, it was a new word document I created in
that sitting and then saved every 15 minutes or so as I was working. I went
to File, Save As the first time, and the continued to use File, Save after
that. It's what I've always done, and no problems before. Something I
should mention, as the computer froze I was in the middle of saving it and it
wanted me to save it with some new file name with an WLR and maybe some other
letters in it. I didn't save it as that and it wouldn't let me change the
name, but I thought I'd at least get to keep my last saved version of the
document. Then, restart the program and nothing is there.

Susan,

The reference to WLR in the file name makes think along the lines of a
corrupt registry key. I'm not the best on this area, so hopefully someone
will join in.

I would suggest that you set the auto save function, which will ensure you
have a recovery file available if it happens again.

I'll do some searching in the mean time.
