Document hangs when opened ...

gmd

We are having trouble opening several Word documents using Office 2004 Word
with the latest updates, the problem occurs on more than one computer running
MAC OS 10.3.7. We are able to open the document, but then the "wheel"
appears and the program hangs. We have to force quit Word.

We have tested a couple of small documents and the problem does not occur.
The files that seem to be causing the problem were received in e-mails from
PCs. We have checked to see if the documents contain MACROs or are infected
with viruses, but they are OK.

Help!

These documents may be corrupt or they may contain elements (graphics or
tables maybe?) that MacWord can't handle for some reason.

Try "uncorrupting" the documents first according to the procedure you'll
find here: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm>. (If
using Safari, you'll have to hit Refresh once or twice; otherwise use
Internet Explorer.)

If you can't keep the documents from hanging long enough to apply the fixes,
ask the PC sender to try on his end (the "copy all but the last paragraph"
fix only) and resend to you.

If this procedure doesn't work, see if you can figure out which element(s)
are causing the problem. Can you have the sender mail you a version with
text only to see if that also causes the hangs?
