document image writer

Can anyone explain why the 'Microsoft Office Document Image Writer; insists
on being the default printer whenever Office 2003 is installed/modified or
(seemingly) patched?
I have had to reset the default on a number of occasions.

Hi Alan,

I haven't run into this as being an issue.
The current default printer set in Word in File=>print shouldn't normally be switched by updating MS Office 2003 unless you have no
other printer driver installed there.

I'm having the same issue. I'm in a school environment and I have a number
of machines that I've had to delete the Microsoft Document image writer and
it keeps reappearing and setting itself as the default printer.

I'm looking for an answer. I don't want to keep doing this.

Hi Eric,

The MS Office 2003 Document Image Writer is an optional installation item of MS Office as part of MS Office Document Imaging &
Scanning.

If you delete an installed feature of MS Office (including that printer) then the MS Installer will try to repair it. If you set
that feature to 'Not Available' (assuming users can't run options through Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel) then it
should not 'come back'.

The only other Office family product that installs that outside of the desktop apps is the MS Office Live Meeting Client, with the
name of MS Office Live Meeting Writer. >>

I realize I can redistribute the install but I have it out there on
about 300 workstations so far and we are realizing that that printer is
getting set as default for some reason - I will recustomize and remove
it (thought it might be a nice feature) but it seems there should be a
way for it not to want to be defualt all the time...

Thanks for your response

Hi Eric,

I haven't seen a scenario where the default printer would change to that one on its own if there are also other printers available
in File=>Print in Word.

You may want to see if this happens only in certain profiles.
