Document in use by another

I use Word97 on a stand-alone computer (not on a network),
and occasionally I will try to open a recently used
document only to get a message to the effect that the
document is in use by another user. Similarly, I will on
occasion find that I cannot delete a temporary document
(.tmp) or an autosave recovery document even though Word
is closed. In both cases, I must reboot before I can open
or delete the documents in question. Is there a way to
remedy these situations without having to reboot?

Hello Les,

This error can happen for a several reasons. A few were resolved with SR-1
and SR-2 for Office 97, make sure these patches are installed to the
system. Another issue may be related to temp your files, you may want to go
to the Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files and folders in that
folder. Be sure to reboot the system prior to deleting these files and then
go directly to and delete the files. When getting the error that the file
is in use do you have Outlook running and set as the default E-Mail editor.
When Opening Outlook the application creates a connection to Word that
remains until you close Outlook

Please let me know if this helps
