document is locked for editing by wrong user

In the past few days (it seems to be right after applying the latest rash of security patches) I have noticed a change on at least 4 computers in the office. All of the computers are networked and share a common set of files. In the past, if A had the file open and B tried to access it, word would respond that the document is locked for editing by "A" (so things worked as they should). Now if A has the file open, and B tries to access it, word responds that the document is locked for editing by " C" (the name is seemingly random and does not seem to be related to who is currently editing it, or who created the file, it seems to pull a name from the list of users who have recently have edited it, but not necessarily who is currently editing it). Has anyone else seen this problem, and (more importantly) know how to resolve it?

Thanks.
