document map and footnote difficulty

I rely heavily both on the document map and the footnote functions. The
document map causes two difficulties with Word (in order of priority): First,
with the document map open, when you insert a footnote and then close the
foot note pane, Word inexplicably returns you to the BEGINNING of the
document (as opposed to where the footnote is in the document). This has been
a problem with the last few versions of Word and is extremely annoying,
particularly when working on a large document. Please fix this problem.
Second, if Word is started with the document map open, when you open a file a
new Word window is started rather than opening the document in the existing
window.

Can you expand on your second comment?

What version Word are you using? If you go to Tools/Options/View, do
you have "Windows in the Taskbar" enabled or disabled?

How are you opening the document? Are you using File/Open or
double-clicking the document in an Exploring window such as My
Computer?

Thanks for your feedback. With respect to the second issue, here is how to
reproduce the problem I’m having:

Word sometimes opens with or without the document map depending on whether
it was on when I last closed the program.

Case#1: Word opens with the document map open.
1) open word: “Document1.doc†comes up as the default. I normally start Word
via a shortcut on the desktop and then open the needed file within word
(file/open or recently used list).
2) now open a file (say it is called “example.docâ€)
-on my computer “example.doc†opens in a separate Word window.

Case#2: Word opens without the document map
If you repeat 1) and 2) “Example.doc†opens in the same Word window.

Case #3: Word opens without the document map
If, after opening word (step 1) you enable the document map before opening
“example.doc†then “example.doc†will open in a separate Word window.

In this way sometimes “example.doc†opens in the same or a new window
depending on whether or not the document map is open. I would rather see
“example.doc†just replace the unmodified “document1.doc,†whether or not the
document map is open (opening the document, as in cast#3 shouldn't count as a
modification). I don’t like having to close extraneous windows every time I
open a file.

I had “show windows in taskbar†enabled. Disabling it only *appears* to
solve the problem. If the document map is open and I open “example.doc†it
looks like it is opening in the same window (which is good), but in fact
“document1.doc†is still open (see file list under Window). Also, I prefer
that the windows are shown in the task bar; loosing that feature is not worth
avoiding having to close an extraneous window now and then.

Thanks for looking into this,
Josh R

Thanks for the additional information. I understand what you are
encountering now.

When the Document Map is displayed the Document Map style is added to
the document. The addition isn't as visible since they now suppress
the view of several styles as it was in previous versions of Word.

I suspect this is enough for Word to perceive the document has been
modified even though technically it hasn't. It isn't enough to invoke
the prompt to save the document but it is enough to prevent Word from
automatically closing the document.

This has been happening ever since the Document Map was introduced in
Word 97 so I'm not sure we'll see a change in the behavior anytime
soon. However I'll but it on my 'bug list' and pass it along the next
opportunity I have.

If you don't want to close extra windows then as a workaround you
could add the File/ Close All command to your toolbar. This way a
single click can close all open documents. If you need more
information on how to customize your toolbar and add the command let
us know and we'd be happy to provide the additional information.

Note you can also hold Shift and open the File menu to access the
Close All (and Save All) command.
