Document Map displays things it shouldn't.

I am working with a humongous document (>25 MB; >1000 pages) in Word 2007
(compatibility mode). <Please, no suggestions about breaking it up or
converting it to Word 2007-only mode; every solution has a reason why it is
not good.>

The problem is that if I open the file with the document map on, it insists
on promoting some (but not all) Figures and other text lines to the top level.

I have gone through and "fixed" the document map by going into Outline mode
and demoting the incorrect level 1 entries to body text. After I have done
this, the document map is fine and everything works well--until the next time
I open the document with the Document Map on. Then the problem recurs. (If I
don't "fix" it, then both the document map and the outline both remain messed
up.)

If I open the document without the Document Map up and then "ctrl-end" to
the end of the document (forcing repagination), when I open the Document Map
it is just fine.

So the solution (work around) to my problem is to simply open the file
WITHOUT the Document Map on. Unfortunately, there are circumstances when Word
insists on displaying the Document Map when it opens the file. So, my
question is: Is there a way, in the registry perhaps, to force Word 2007 to
ALWAYS open ALL documents with the Document Map OFF?

thank you in advance

Thanks Tony. I should have mentioned that I was aware of that from my
previous research into this issue. However, this doesn't answer my question.

I am NOT trying to make Document Map work any different than it currently
does. I am trying to force it to NEVER start when I open a file. If I want a
document map, I will ask for one.

However, I am curious as to why it doesn't AutoFormat if I have moved to the
end of the file (which forces a repagination) BEFORE I ask for the Document
Map.

Thanks--

In order to open all the word documents with "Document Map" off, perform the
following steps.
Open word.
Then, click on the "View" tab.
Next, under "Show/Hide" option, click to uncheck the "Document Map" option.
This will turn off the Document Map in Word.

Thanks. I do know about that. In fact, I have the "Document Map" on my quick
access toolbar. But it seems that there is more to it than that. Sometime,
one of these huge documents will open with Document Map visible even if there
is nothing else open. The only way that works most of the time is to open a
small document first, make sure that Document Map is off, and then open the
huge documents. I am not certain that even that is 100 percent reliable. I
think that even if I do that, I have seen one of the huge documents open with
the document map on even if no other open Word windows have the document map
on (probably because I forgot to turn off the document map before I closed
it).

Perhaps there is another way to approach this. I understand the the problem
I am having--of things becoming level 1 in the document map--is because there
is something deficient in the formatting that makes Word decide to autoformat
the document. And the problem doesn't occur if I force Word to repaginate by
going to the end of the document before I turn on the document map.

I have laboriously gone through and manually forced each of the offending
items to body text or to figure caption style. Yet still it happens--possibly
to different items, I don't know. The question is, is there a way to make the
formatting of the document such that Word won't think it needs to
automatically assign formats to things? Clearly the approach I have taken
doesn't do that.

TIA--Sherman
