Document map does not navigate when clicked

I have a large MSWord document previously created in Word2003.

When I convert this file to the 2007 format and open it the document map
will display, but I cannot use it to navigate the doc.

I also cannot use outline view (it says there is not enough memory, and
since I have 4GB that seems unlikely).

Both still work fine in compatibility mode with the 2003 file.

Any suggestions?

Running XP Pro with all updates, twin dual core Xeon 2GHz processors
