Document Map expand/collapse problem

In the document map, I cannot collapse or expand the
section 1 heading (to view the subsections below it). It
seems that the problem has something to do with Section 1
coming directly after the Table of Contents. If I put a
page break between the TOC and Section 1, it fixes the
problem, but I do not want a page break there.

Here’s another clue, if it helps: if I select a line in
the doc map and then right click, the selection is
highlighted in yellow. When I do this to section 1, it is
the only line highlighted in gray.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what my problem may be
and how I can fix it?

Since you don't tell us the version of Word, nor give a
detailed description of how the document is set up, we can't
really test this...

You say "directly after the TOC". Two thoughts:
1. Are you certain it's not inside the TOC field?

2. If you press ENTER between the TOC field and "Section 1",
does that make a difference?
