Document map has problems

I tried to follow the directions provided in Help, and I
can't find anything in the knowledge base on this...

In Word 2002 my document map does not show + and - signs.
Also, when I click on Document Map in Styles and
Formatting and choose Modify, the changes I make to the
formatting do not actually affect the Document Map. The
headings in the Document Map are indented about 1/2" and I
don't want them indented at all. I also choose the Hanging
option, but it won't do that either.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why Document Map is not
cooperating?
