Document Map

I feel like a fool having used WORD for over a decade and just realizing I
don't know a thing about "Document Mapping". I've read the overview and
played with a document that I thought I'd formatted in outline form. The
Document Map reported it wasn't so. Got an Error. I've always had trouble
controlling outline formats. I've got a long document now that is dicey. I
highlighted selected lines and now when I press Enter to make another line
and section, the outline number remains shaded in the color I selected.
Q1) How do I get rid of this please?
I also used to have buttons in the bottom left corner that allowed me to
make the document "normal" or "web" and 2 more selections I think. My
experimenting with "Document Map" blew that to hell. Now I can't find those
buttons.
Q2) What tool bar should I select or procedure should I follow to regain
these please?
Any suggestions about applying that document map would be helpful. I keep
getting a message telling me there's no format... but I'm looking at an
outline. Don't know where to go from here.

Document Map displays only paragraphs to which Word's built-in heading
styles (or others with an outline level) have been applied. To restore the
view buttons, display the horizontal scroll bar (Tools | Options | View).
