Document Merge Problem

The User is not attempting to merge documents, but her
workstation consistently receives the following message:
"Do you want to merge changes in 'VI30458.doc' in
to 'C:\Documents and Settings\v3pxxx\Desktop\RATE
LOCK.doc'?"

Do you know what setting in Word is attempting to merge
these documents?
