Document Misbehaviour

N

Nick Duncan

I typically have problems with Word doucments when they
have the following characteristics:
i) they are over 30 pages long
ii) they have drawn diagrams
iii) they have inserted pictures
iv) they have endnotes/references (unsing Endnote)

I tend to write documents that have all of these
characteristics.

Some of the behaviour is:
i) Cursor jumps when changing view
ii) Outline flickers (this is VERY iritating if you like
outline)
iii) The document hangs on closing
iv) The document gets very slow to use, very 'spongy'.

I use Office XP student edition on a 128MB P2 with Win ME.

I have tried opening with repair and this does not solve
the problem (although it does seem to help with the
hanging problem). Is there not a way of debugging Word
documents and possibly getting rid of some attributed that
may be redundent and causing the problem? I should say
that I have used track changes and that has proved quite
hard to stop once started - sometimes portions of text
will be shown marked up for seemingly no reason. One thing
that helped a bit was viewing in FINAL mode, rather than
one of the other omodes that for some reason it had got on
to.

Any help on this would greatly improve my day to day
experience of Word.
Best wishes,
Nick Duncan

I so often see people saying that you should upgrade your RAM or get a bigger machine. I rarely agree. In this case, I find myself saying it. At http://www.microsoft.com/office/previous/xp/sysreqs.asp, MS suggests at LEAST a P3 (you have a P2). I also suggest that you don't use Word (or at least don't use the same document) to create your drawn objects. Instead, make a PowerPoint presentation with one slide per graphic. Once each graphic is completed, select all, group, copy, and paste special as a picture into Word. I have found many docs go corrupt when they contain many drawing objects in the graphics. It's much easier for Word to handle one picture than, say, 30 drawn objects. If you have 30 drawings, that's 90 drawn objects it must keep track of
