Document Recovery

The document I was working on in Word yesterday won't open today. The
filename has been changed from "filename" to "~$lename"

When I attempt to open the file from the recent documents pane, I get a
warning that says I either need to update my anti-virus definitions (I use
Norton, and everything is updated to today) or the file is corrupt.

What can I try to do to recover the document?

When I go into the "My Recent Documents" folder, the file is listed as
"~$lename", but it is a defunct shortcut.

Even if I lose all the formatting of the document, I really need to recover
the 20 pages or so of text.

The filename you cite is not your document but the "owner" file (see
“Description of how Word creates temporary files†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632). You need to look further for the
actual document.
