Document sharing

Is it possible with Project Server in conjunction with Sharepoint to share
documents with external contractors securely? Project would have to have an
extranet site setup, and contractors would need their own Project accounts,
but would they still be able to access (check-out??) the documents? And what
impact would that have on the domain users that also have to access the same
documents? Also, would there be a security or performance based reason to use
Sharepoint Portal Server over Sharepoint Services, or does it really make a
difference?

Thanks

Yes, it's possible. You would have to buy a CAL for each contractor or each
contractor machine, and I'm virtually certain that they would have to have a
Windows ID on your system, because Windows SharePoint Services requires
Windows Authentication (not Project Server Authentication). If you have a
LOT of contractors, it might be more economical to purchase the External
Connector ($30K, unlimited users).

You might ask your security question in the SharePoint Portal discussion
group.

BT,

You may also want to recheck your licensing for SQL Server and other
supporting technologies if you make Project Server an internet application.
In our case, making Project Server an internet application made the internet
alternative cost prohibitive due to increased license fees.

In our case, the contractors are able to access the system via a Citrix
server connection. It was much cheaper to do it this way in the end. It was
also safer since we have more control over access and allowed functions via
Citrix.
