document templates

I have downloaded templates into same folder as all other .dot templates are
in and they show there in an Explorer file list; but they do NOT appear from
the New Document dialogue box.
The tabs listed are: General - Legal Pleadings - Letters & Faxes - Memos -
Other Documents - Publications - Reports - Web Pages. The newly added .dot's
do not appear in any of these tabs.

Folder: Program Files > Microsoft Office > Templates > 1033

If I click on one of these templates (My Outlook Calendar.dot - for example)
in Explorer list a blank document opens in Word and I can create a calendar.

Open Word and go to the Tools > Options > File Locations dialog. Make a note
of the locations shown for the User Templates folder and the Workgroup
Templates folder. (Because the dialog is too narrow, you may have to click
the Modify button and look at the tree diagram to figure out the complete
path.)

Move your downloaded templates into either of those folders, and they'll
show up in the General tab of the New Document dialog. If you make a
subfolder there and put templates in it, the subfolder name will appear as
another tab. (If you want the templates to appear in one of the default tabs
such as Memos, you have to create a subfolder with that name in the User
Templates folder.)

Word doesn't use the Microsoft Office\Templates\1033 folder; in fact, we're
not sure why it's there at all.

Curious. That's where all the templates that do show in the New Document
dialogue box currently and they all function from there.

Word reports path to templates is:
Documents & Settings/Administrator/Microsoft/Templates
Where there are three files: ~$normal.dot, normal.dot & post.oft.

None of the other .dot or .wzd or .xml files listed in the
..../Templates/1033 folder are there...the ones that appear in the New
Document tabbed dialogue box.

These seems 'mysterious' to me. Why are these documents accessible if the
path is different?

Windows 2000 Pro. (I'm quite new to this OS, after using Win98SE for too
long.)

No.

I did move one of the templates that was not showing in the tabbed dialogue
box to the folder that word reported as using and that .dot does appear in
the General tab now as do all the other tabs and items even though there are
now only four files in the .../...administrator.../templates folder.

Also, adding folders to ANY of the template folders does NOT produce a new
tab in the new document dialogue box.

User templates are normally stored in the Users Profile typically:

C>Documents and Settings>Username>Application Data/Microsoft/Templates

You should find Normal.dot already in that folder (that appears as 'Blank
Document' in the General tab of File, New dialog and is the same as opening
a blank document). The reason that this has been changed in Windows 2000 and
Windows XP is so that templates and customisation may be user dependent.

After you add the folders, you have to put at least one template in
each folder to make its tab appear.

I'm guilty of a little exaggeration. But you have to admit MS made a
real dog's dinner of this setup.

The part that explains Steph's confusion is this:

Important: The Microsoft Office programs do not recognize a custom
template that you may have created if you place it in this folder [the
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033 folder, in the
default English installation]. Only "installed" templates can be used
in this folder. However, if you open an "installed" template and make
changes to it, the modified template can be used in this folder.

The part that explains Steph's confusion is this:

Yes, I was confused by all that. Your concise explanation dispelled the
confusion.


And yes...an empty folder does not show, but as soon as a template is placed
in the folder it does. Thanks again.
