Document try to open twice

I am running Office 97 on a PC running Windows 2000. When
I try to open a document from a shortcut I receive the
following error message :-
A document with the name <FILENAME> is already open. You
cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the
documents are in different folders.

I have installed the latest office 97 service pack.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem?
