Document versioning

I am having difficulty managing the vast number of Visio documents I create.
More specifically, which version of a document that a customer is viewing. I
know I could manually add a Text object with a manually managed Version
number. However what I would like to see is a facility where by a Document
being saved has a Version attribute that is automatically incremented by each
Save (or restet to 1 by each SaveAs).
For example I creat a document and save it as D:\Folder\VisioDoc.vsd What
gets saved is D:\Folder\VisioDoc(1).vsd. Then I edit the document some more
and save it again, this time the document gets saved as
D:\Folder\VisioDoc(2).vsd... etc. Should I decide to edit
D:\Folder\VisioDoc(2).vsd and perform a SaveAs to D:\Folder\VisioDocTwo.vsd
this would actually get saved as D:\Folder\VisioDocTwo(1).vsd. This then
gives me a couple of real advantages. 1. I have all versions of a document
readily available, and not just the latest. 2. I can use the Insert|Field...
Menu item to add a Text object into a Document that clearly displays the
Docuemnt filename that will contain the documents Version number.

Microsoft, I understand that you do not normally reply to suggestions.
However I would like to know if this will be considered, so a reply to my
profiles email would be greatly appreciated.

You need to look at a proper revision or version control system, there
are many of these on the market, simple to comples, free to expensive.

From what you are describing it sounds like the features of Windows
SharePoint Server. It will allow you track and control access to not only
Visio files but many other types of files.
